The Mira Mesa HS "Sapphire Sound" is an award-winning ensemble that is located in the heart of San Diego and is the largest Band program in the San Diego Unified School District. Mira Mesa HS is a community based school, so most of our students have grown up with one another. They openly accept new students each year to the program and look forward to the many performance opportunities they have as a group. The Band has performed at 2000 Olympic Opening Ceremonies in Sydney, Australia, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., New York at the United Nations and Carnegie Hall, and they marched in the 2016 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA. One of the most important aspects of the Sapphire Sound is their unity as the "Blue Team", their grit, their willingness to learn new things, and their hope. Together we can achieve great things.
The 2019-2020 school year will start off with the "Sapphire Sound" Marching Band and Color Guard rehearsing for field tournaments, band reviews, and other school/community performances. In the spring semester, the Marching Band breaks into three ensembles: Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and the Concert Band.
Members from the Band have the opportunity to audition for the Musical Pit Orchestra, be a part of Pep Band, form small ensembles, or be a part of the solo and ensemble concert in the spring. Students will also be encouraged to audition for the San Diego Unified School District Honor Band, the SCSBOA All-Southern CA Honor Band, and the CBDA All-State Honor Band. The 220-member Marching Band and Color Guard is presenting our field show, "Home". We invite you to join us at a home football game, our 27th Annual Band Tournament hosted at school on November 2nd, and/or at our Winter Concert on December 12th, 2019.
Our program believes in hard work, focus, commitment, being "All in!", and having a pride of excellence in music! The Band room is a second home for many and my door is always open. ~ Mrs. C
(AKA: Mrs. C)
29 years in the education field, I have had the belief in "Music" and all that it can do for a student. The arts are essential to the academic success of any student and it is my passion to help students along through these four years of high school. Within the Band and Color Guard, we have a comprehensive program. Students can learn and develop their instrumental skills, take AP Music Theory, which will help their growth in music comprehension and composition, have repeated opportunities for performance, set high goals and standards, and have the opportunity to become a student leader. Accountability and teamwork are essential in each class. "All in", "Passion in Performance", and "Never Give Up" is something we live by here at MMHS.
Currently I am President of SCSBOA (Southern CA School Band & Orchestra Association), one of the oldest professional organizations for music education in the state. It is an honor to help guide music education not only for the students of Mira Mesa HS, but also for half of the State of CA.
